While doing further research on the VAMP, I came across something that AK would love to see. Next, check out the Swamp Smasher in the first post!

Oh and I added AK's info about the Buzz Boar. Thanks for that great find, AK!

I hope this thread doesn't fade into oblivion! I'm not sure if it's "sticky-worthy", but it'd be a shame if it was forgotten. Perhaps as a section on the main site might be cool? What do you guys think?

    Thumbs up Yes.

I totally agree. There has been more research done for this post than any other I've read here. And I'm sure lots of people wonder about this stuff too, especially folks who aren't THAT into millitary hardware, but are curious to learn about some of the inspiration for the best toys ever made.

And there are lots more vehicles! We should do something. As least ask Rooster3D to make this an article for the Sit-Rep, so it isn't just forgotten.

I don't know if this was caught by anyone else, but the AWE Striker came out in 1985, and the DPVs that are listed as it's counterpart in the real world were first used in combat in 1991. Is there anything that shows the development time frame for these? Or could it have been the OTHER way around? SOme US weapons developer could have seen his kid's toy and said, "That's cool, we can do that with a real dune buggy and use it in real life!"

The key words to the Wikipedia article are "first used in combat". Within the timespan between AWE's 1984 development stage and 1991, the DPV could have been developed and refined, then used for training, and then for recon, and finally used in combat. Even if the article is using the term combat as encompassing recon as well, then there are still the other factors. Early in its conception the DPV could have been featured in Popular Science and military magazines, or most likely in off-road magazines. That would have been enough to catch the eye of GI Joe toy designers. Due to the striking similarities in hood design and other fine details, it is highly unlikely that this is a case of reverse influence. Furthermore, the article goes on to say that early renditions of the buggy had a TOW system that could effectively be operated by a two-man crew, which pretty much puts to rest the notion of coincidence.

Hmm the Fang has always reminded me of a supped up ultralight since most of these things are customs (esspecialy back in the 80s) it is more than likely not possible to find an insperational counterpart.

The Lynx bears a somewhat striking but not perfect resemblance to the M109 series.

As to the HiSS all I can think of in terms of similar vehicals (considering the name; High Speed Sentry)are the old TKs like the M18 Hellcat
