I was browsing an issue of YoungBlood : Genesis days ago and lo and behold, the characters Chapel and Battlestone are wielding Cobra Weapons:

That is surely a SAW-viper machine gun. Is there a real-life equivalent of this HMG?

A SAW in the military is the Squad Automatic Weapon. It's actually not a machine gun...more like an automatic rifle. It has a collapsable bipod on the front. It uses 5.56mm or 223 cal ammo. The ammo can be fired with a regular M-16 magazine or a drum with 200 linked rounds. It was created to replace the automatic M-16A1 when the army switched to the M-16A2 (single shot/3 round burst). You will have 2 of these per infantry squad and 6 per platoon. It has it's problems but it's a decent weapon. It's dry weight is 17lbs and is kinda top heavy at the barrel due to the bipod assembly so it doesnt feel as balanced as the M-60 or M-240G. The M-60 being a little over 20lbs is actually less of a burden to carry. The bipods tend to get loose and will collapse on you if you arent careful. It also comes with a spare barrel that you need to change if you are firing a lot of rounds...otherwise the barrel will turn red and white and you can watch the rounds actually leave the barrel...

Hope this helped you out...

Also wanted to add that the weapon that came with the SAW viper isnt a SAW like we used in the military...

I suspect that the drawings with the SAWviper gun are swipes.

Rob Liefeld(the creator of youngblood) is known for swiping (copying art) from other comics.

One of his covers from X-force showing "Cable" was taken directly from a picture of Roadblock, 50 caliber and everything..
