View Full Version : So who are the Sigma Six?

Okay, so the upcoming animated series from Studio GONZO is going to focus on a squad of six that includes Duke, Snake Eyes, Heavy Duty, and Spirit. So who are the other two?

Whenever there's a six-person team in a Japanese adventure series, there are the following character roles: the protagonist, the well-meaning rival, the healer, the big guy, the innocent, and the mysterious outsider with a tragic past. It's pretty obvious who Duke, Snake Eyes, and Heavy Duty are, but who's Spirit? The healer has to either be female or an effeminate young man (like Shun in Saint Seiya, George in G Gundam). Spirit has the established characterization and the hairstyle to pull the role off, but it's hard to imagine him as a pretty boy! Maybe the healer will be the team's female character, which I imagine is most likely to be Scarlett for the interpersonal dynamics with the other known characters. I'm going to guess that would make Spirit the squad member who's frequently challenging Duke in order to improve both their characters. Or maybe Scarlett will fill that role, acting as the strong-willed female character American viewers seem most comfortable with these days. And the innocent? Well, Hit & Run would be perfect for that role given his backstory, but his existance has probably been forgotten outside of the fan community. Any guesses here, people?

All I gotta say is, it had better be Flint and the new Eco-Warriors.

It's Ozone... with the BEARD OF JUSTICE!

Oh goody! It's the A-Team in cartoon form!

Too bad this will be a dismal failure. Not necessarily the cartoon, that might work, but the overpriced toy line is not going to go anywhere.

I wonder if a Hasbro official read our thread awhile back on who would be in the Joe team if you narrowed it down to five or six members? I don't remember what everyone's list had on it. Can anyone find that thread?

Snake Eyes
Scarlett
Roadblock
Duke

These were certainly on a lot of people's lists. I'm surprised they picked Spirit since we haven't even seen him in the new line. But I think he is a good choice.

So who are we missing?

Beach Head
Stalker
Doc
Low-Light
Falcon
Hawk
Gung Ho
Shipwreck - don't we need somebody for comic relief?
Flint
Lady Jaye

We'll see who else makes it into Sigma Six soon.

US Special Operations Teams work in groups of six: Leader, Weapons Specialist, Communications, Medic, Demolitions/Engineer, Intelligence

If Sigma Six were to follow this standard, then I would think:

Duke -Leader
Medic -Spirit? (Native Americans tend to get casted as the medicine man)
Intelligence -Snake-Eyes (Not really a spy, but a stealth warrior type)
Weapons Specialist -Heavy Duty (Big Gun Guy)

I would imagine Sigma Six will have the nerd techno charcter for communications, and perhaps another charcter with a big rocket type weapon to fill the Demolitions.

For the record, I would have liked a six man team of:

Duke, Snake-Eyes, Stalker, Roadblock, Spirit, Tunnel Rat with necessary specialty revisions to balance out the team. Of course, they will need vehicle specialists to back them up.

Are we sure that there are literally only 6 of them? Or is it just "Sigma 6" as in "Rainbow Six" or "Deep 6" meaning a name that has a 6 in it, but does not mean that there are 6 members.

If there really are 6 team members, I predict: Scarlett & Hi-tech

Any super hero team needs a girl, and needs someone really smart.

Seeing the reason for the lack of women in the boy toy lines is the little boys do not want to play with a "doll" I don't think we will be seeing a female character. Looking at the recent toy line and which character they pushed the most I would say Tunnel Rat would be a good bet as well as Gun Ho, or Beachhead.

Well, my personal picks for an animation-friendly squad of six would be these characters:

Duke (leader)
Stalker (second-in-command/leader's rival)
Snake Eyes (scout/mysterious outsider)
Spirit (pointman/innocent)
Scarlett (corpsman/healer)
Roadblock (machine gunner/big guy)

It would be a new continuity to give the writer some freedom, with Duke and Roadblock as new additions to a GI Joe that already included the others, so Stalker, Snake Eyes, and Scarlett can have some history. Spirit's backstory would include growing up on a Reservation through his childhood and adolesence, so he can fill the innocent role. The squad takes its orders from General Abernathy, Wild Bill and Airborne do double duty as both transport and Comanche recon/attack helo crew, and Shipwreck provides water transport and comic relief. Wild Bill would be the helo pilot at the time of the accident that burned Snake Eyes' face and throat, and Spirit and Airborne could play off of each other in interesting ways because they're so different. Other Joes could appear when the script calls for someone with their Milspec.

Yes, the Joes will have Cobra as their main nemesis. From the press release:
"Includes Duke, Snake Eyes, Heavy Duty, SPIRIT IRON-KNIFE and the C.O.B.R.A. ninja STORM SHADOW." They wouldn't have a Cobra in the first wave if they were the central antagonists...

All of that is exactly what I am hoping for! I'm not betting on it though.

Even better would be if Hama was being used to direct the development of the cartoon series. :))

Are we sure that there are literally only 6 of them? Or is it just "Sigma 6" as in "Rainbow Six"

The "Rainbow" anti-terrorist team, was called simply that. The "Six" of "Rainbow Six" referred to the team's director. In this case, John Clark. . .who was akin to Hawk in GIJoe.

Great-great book. I highly recommend it to all Joe fans. :)

Any super hero team needs a girl, and needs someone really smart.

I second that, Scarlett would be on the top of my list.

Silly as it sounds, I really like that idea. No, please don't laugh. :p
Check it out. . .

First season it's some shadowy guy sending the Joes out on special ops. Like Charlie or something.

Second Season, we find out he's really (a.) a terrorist mole, (b.) a mutant, (c.) a supercomputer, (d.) a demon, etc. etc. you get the idea ;)

The 3-3/4" line is dead.

Just as dead as it was at the end of the 1994 run.

"Hiatus" is Hasbro talk for DEAD.

When the Sigma Six 8" line fails (and it WILL fail - witness Super-Joe, GIJoe Extreme, and Sgt.Savage), it will be a LONG time before we see any 3-3/4" figures. If ever.

I hate to say it folks, but "I told you so."

Much as I'm in total 100% agreement with your opinion AO, you posted this very similarly worded statement eight times now on various threads.

Why don't you just save yerself the hassle and make it part of your signature tagline?

Well, I had it posted just once in a thread I started, but dockingbay locked it and said I couldn't start it as a new thread and that I should post in existing ones.

So that's exactly what I did! :)

I just find it humourous that Hasbro is giving us this "hiatus" line. They are just trying to avoid the firestorm of flat-out telling us the line has been cancelled. When Sigma Six tanks, I just don't see them starting the 3 3/4" line back up.

Sometimes, it's apparent that Hasbro really thinks we collectors are stupid.

And apparently from your actions - they may be right.

You know by asking for there not to be anymore multiple threads on the same subject, it wasn't my way to ask you to flood the board.

I agree with everybody else, in that this new 8" line is a self-prophecizing failure waiting to happen.

The figs are way too over-priced, and think about the scale for vehicles for these figs......Not to mention that they will be even more over-priced than the figs.

What was HASBRO thinking?? :(

...A lot like the toys from the Small Soilders movie? I think they're cool in the aspect of being 6" or 8"? (forgot the scale) representations of the 3 3/4" figures. But I won't get them.

Hasbro should know that it won't sell. The figures might be too big and like the 12" Joes, may be construide as more doll like than action figures (MHO) A beef I had about the 12", no matter how cool and detailed the acc. were, the figures didn't come off as action figures to me but more dolls in the sense of Barbie.

Secondly the price tag per figure. With Video Games already ripping a hole in the world of toys, why buy a $15 action figure when you can buy a video game with the same amount of money? I know that during the mid to late 80's, during Joe and Transformer's hay day, video games were hella-expensive. Mario Brothers sold for like $50 bucks, stacked up against my $2.79 Flint, there was no contest. But now that I can buy a classic Playstation game for $10 at Walmart, why would I spend money on a doll?

Another reason, with millions of fans having hundreds of figures in their collection, there is no way to incorprate a brand new breed of joe at a 6-8" scale into the world of 3 3/4 scale figures. For their Transformer brand, Hasbro, still manages to keep each sub group separate, Alternators, Reissues, Energon, Armada, yet for Joe, they decide to obliterate both of their sub groups and create a brand new one?

Where's the logic in this? Collectors of 12" and 3 3/4" aren't going to run out and purchase a limited run 8" set that's unproven. Hasn't hasbro learned from the mistakes of Sgt. Savage and GIJoe Extreme? (Of course not) You can only revamp a toy line but so much.

I still scratch my head and wonder as I think about a post I started sometime ago asking about the thought process of Hasbro's R&D team.

And by the way, with a billion Dukes, why do they pursists in creating a new one of him and Storm Shadow and Snake eyes? Boggles the mind, don't it?

Here's where Hasbro misses it's que, yet again... why start a joe cartoon on a non proven entity? why not do a series on the proven 3 3/4 line?

Without starting a Hasbro bash post/thread/theme on this post, i'll say this, the R&D team remains to blame for the woes of Joe.

You're right... Let's talk about scale. Hasbro cries and moans about why it won't produce a vehicle the size of the Whale, yet they increase the size of it's figures? Are we doomed to be over saturated with mortorcycles? repaint after repaint of the same old thing?
