I noticed while browsing some user profiles that there is a place that says referrals. What is this for? Most I see have 0 there, but have seen a few with a 1 or something. I also didnt see a place to 'refer' someone. Am I missing something?

Ah-ha, makes sense. I'm not sure why that would be tracked, at least by anyone other than somebody from the business end of the board, but it's interesting.
