I know both are professional soldiers paid for their skills. I also know that in todays world their skills are more sort after than ever. But what is the basic distinction. Is it that one is paid to protect and guard while the other is paid to kill? Has anyone else been doing any research on this? I think it would make a great discussion.

I think partially, from my own little knowledge, it's which side of the job your on. kind of like the destinction between "freedon fighter" or "revolutionary terrorist".

I agree ... private contractors are the ones you see protecting the important people visiting the war zones for talks & treaties nowadays, however the mercenaries are the ones on the other side who are paid to kill those VIPs.

Do an internet search for "executive outcomes." This is great example of a private contractor.

Major Bludd is a mercenary. A gun for hire.
