View Full Version : Sigma 6 - Best G.I. Joe Animation Ever
Blight 09-13-2005, 10:38 PM To rebuff 'flash 70s' argument I think this series is probably the best animated version of G.I. Joe I've ever seen. It's not perfect - well actually no, it IS perfect. The animation is beautiful, the action is non-stop, the dialogue (while a bit watered down but it is geared towards kids) is very good, the story is intriguing, the voice acting is good, and the score is excellent.
Now I realize some of you in the Joe fan community are turned off because your knowledge of Anime extends to about Dragonball Z and Pokemon, and thus have warped, biased, unfounded, and ignorant opinions about this show and for those of you out there well - that's your problem.
But I also know there is an equal number of us old school fans out there who like this show too and I advocate that you keep watching each Saturday so we can continue to look forward to more seasons of this excellent show and dissuade Hasbro from ever again even considering making another bad CGI G.I. Joe cartoon that makes Beach Head sound like a California surfer, includes veterinarians on the team roster and makes Duke like a Jay Leno impersonator.
The Sunbow cartoon will always hold a special place in our harts but you know the current level of G.I. Joe animation has matured and grown to a new level of excellence when the Joe team's sidearms actually look like 9M Glock handguns and not props from a Star Wars film.
So everybody who likes the show raise your hands, for those of you who don't - go elsehwere.
MikePrime 09-13-2005, 10:54 PM Your argument works against you. Sigma 6 is just like Pokemon, it's cheap, throwaway anime. I know full well that anime, like any other media, has varying degrees of quality. This is all about anime style. Has it been done in a realistic manner, Sigma 6 would look good, but it's not. even Dragon Ball Z looks better than Sigma 6, since it is a different style of anime.
Have you ever seen the Patlabor movies? All of the people and settings are drawn in a realistic manner. The Japanese people in those anime movie actually look like Japanese people.
G.I. Joe the Movie is the best G.I. Joe animation. It combined realism of character design and environments, and the high quality animation of the Japanese studios.
Arashikage_Tengu 09-13-2005, 11:20 PM When I watch any film, from the tv to the big screen, I want to escape reality. I want to become so immersed in the movie/show that I forget the problems of the real world. For this to work, there must be strong, relatable characters, and a storyline and dialogue that makes me want to be a part of it.
The storyline for S6 might be alright, but the dialogue is poorly lacking. Plus, the changing of Tunnel Rats character is totally foreign from his original background. The 2-dimensional anime styling is also poor. What little CGI animation there is, for the vehicles, is still lacking depth.
With the Spytroops and VvV movies, that extra 3rd dimension of depth allowed me to become immersed one step further, than the 2D animation of S6.
I would much rather S6 have been done in the 3D CGI of it's two predecessors.
TheReverend 09-13-2005, 11:26 PM Well I still think it's premature to say GOOD or BAD – How can you make that call on one episode??
My first impression is I like it! I like the style and I think it could work.
I grew up with the sunbow cartoon and marvel comics (Which I doubt this will ever surpass). But, in the last few years, I've become a big fan of anime. So I'm all for Sig6 – I hope it works, and I will keep watching it
Obiwanjacoby 09-14-2005, 01:55 AM I'm guessing that it'll develop a characterization base like most other anime series and get really "in-depth". Sure, the characters won't be anything like Sunbow or Marvel, but they will grow over time.
But what do I know? I also like The Batman and Mew-Mew Power! :D

The new Cartoon sucks. It will last one season and be gone. Much like the new toy. You complain about Beachhead sounding like a surfer in the far superior CGI toon, yet you don't mention Tunnel Rat being turned into a bug eating circus geek in Sigma Sux. Which is worse? By the way a veterinarian on a combat team containing animals is far more believable than Ninjas that can run at the speed of sound. But then I'm not an Anime fan boy so what do I know?
P.S. I'm not going anywhere... :D
Bleak5170 09-14-2005, 05:52 AM I have to agree with MikePrime on this one. I'm not a big anime fan but my girlfriend is so i've seen a fair bit of it. Sigma Six looks "cheap" when compared to most anime out there. It's almost as if they take shortcuts in order to make things cheaper and easier. Kind of like how DIC did with their series. The animation in their stuff was terrible when compared to the original Sunbow miniseries and first season.
The MASS Device 09-14-2005, 11:10 AM This is a weekly cartoon, not a big-budget movie production. Comparing Sigma Six to the best Japanese anime in movies is not a fair comparison. Sigma Six should be compared to other weekly series aimed at kids. I'm no expert on anime, but I expect it is pretty solid when you look at it that way.
As for everything else -- characterisation, plot, dialogue, etc -- everybody has different tastes. This is a kids' show, so their tastes will be what determines the show's ultimate success or failure, not ours. I don't watch any Saturday morning cartoons, but I will watch Sigma Six. I think they've done a good job with it. Just watch the scene where Scarlett's Ice Saber gets hit and then blown up in the first episode for an example of great animation in the Joe universe.
I have seen the CG productions and I can't see how any sane person could wish for that garbage over Sigma Six. But you insane people can still hang around and state your opinion all you like ;)
Tunnel Rat was never a major character in the cartoons that I watched as a kid, so I don't mind if they re-imagine him. But I like to give some creative license to anybody who takes over an established property. Why not enjoy a new take on an old classic? You can enjoy the past without being stuck in it.
Liokaiser 10-02-2005, 12:16 PM Sorry but I'm enjoying it, Gonzo knows how to make Cg and 2D blend well. unlike other companies. Only bad side to this is Hasbro went with 4kids for this. Check out Burst Angel (or one of Gonzo Studio's other not on TV animes), forget what ep it was but in one scene a small team of guys shwo up in different outfits per each and first thing I thought was how GI Joe would look, well only bad thing in that ep all of these guys and girls were killed ( the one girl I saw in the group is shot in the head, guys that looked like hawk with the jetpack and a ninja character were caught off guard)
Anyway I'n enjoying it just wish it wasn't on 4kids and on another or woulda been released on DVD only like a normal anime by Geneon and then probably we would've seen hordes of Vipers and what not being blown away which I bet many of you whiners are wanting. (that or wanting to see them misfiring all the time like the old show)
Me I hope this lasts and it is good just the little brats of today are brainwashed by rerun to death crap like Billy & Mandy (yeah it's a rare time to see a new ep of any of these shows) and Ed, Edd, & Eddy (last time seen in Foster's).
Still for the kids, think doing okay with seeing the BATS v.5 being shot up, but where's the bullet dents that I see, stupid 4kids edit work there I tell yah.
Bermuda Mohawk 10-02-2005, 02:17 PM I think I could maybe accept the S6 animation as the best t.v. animation we've seen based on number of mistakes allowed, fluid motion and overtall quality. I still preffer classic non-computer assisted animation, and as noted anime shows like Patlabor were great to showcase such things.

Actually, Futurama has the best utilization of cel-animation and cel-shaded CGI.
pastelmonster 10-03-2005, 01:08 PM Being on a really tight weekly schedule, a studio will always cut as much corners to get an ep out. We definitely should not compare it to anime films which take around 3 years to produce 90mins of quality animation. Production IG which produced those marvellous anime films like Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell, if you check out the first weekly 26 episode anime they did (GITS SAC) quite frankly the animation was poor too.
It also depends on whether a studio farms out their in-between work overseas, and where they contract that work out too. Alot of animation both Japanese and American are drawn by Filipino studios these days.
But, having said all this, Studio Gonzo has mostly never been strong on 2D animation, you can tell by looking at their past work. It's always choppy and awkward. They are known more for their 3D animation.
Desslar 10-03-2005, 10:02 PM Sunbow owns this junk.
drveovru2 10-03-2005, 10:09 PM i dont mind it, but I like the 80's joe toons better.
that said, I Will not judge it.
I'll let my 5 year old tell me if it sucks or not.
well he said its okay and he didnt leave to go play or ask to change it so I would say its about a 7 on a his scale. which is a kids scale and thats what it was made for. I guess well have to wait a few more weekends to see if it hooks his attention like the teen titans or ninja turtles.
Obiwanjacoby 10-04-2005, 12:07 AM I remember alot of "arm's-length; buddy-buddy" moments in the Sunbow series that make all the Joes look like a bunch of backslapping butch homophobes.
Go back and watch the last ep. of S6 where they pull the Rhino out of the ROCC during that awesome sunset and HighTech is handing Duke a new suit for Snake-Eyes.
Subtle drama, realistic dialogue, & geniune camaraderie.
The haters just don't get it, because the troops aren't acting like the two-dimensional toons they're used to. OMG! They're acting like human beings for a change.

Atreyu 10-04-2005, 11:43 AM the animation was ok, and the plot was exactly what you would expect from a season 1 epi 1 of a gi joe show. My beef is with the style. The characters look too caricatured. This is a major mistake, because a big part of what made gi joe so cool to all of us back in the day, was the realism of it all. The toys moved like real people, and you could recognize an m-16 etc. It made me feel just a little bit more mature than when I was playing with transformers.
ttfndude 10-05-2005, 07:53 AM This new show is justnot quite there for me. I was hoping to see anything on t.v. because that will keep our hopes alive for a decent one. Why does every show have to make everyone look like their asian, I don't get that. Anyways the characters are horrible, sorry but my nephews went outside:eek: after a couple of minutes of this show (they're 9 and 11). I will keep watching to see if it gets better but the new name because it sounds good from tunnel rat??? Yeah storylines are geared to 5-8 yr. olds but the destruction is not so this won't make two seasons. There's a reason that pokemon made it, teen titans made it, and Full Metal Alchemist is making it. They kno who their audience is and they keep it geared toward them. My opp... thanks

So... umm.. are you hoping for a Tunnel Rat / Heavy Duty french kissing scene? I didn't get your point here.

I'm cool with that.
