i havnt seen sigma 6 but i heard it was done in anime style? if so it must be the childrens variety of anime. That being said-
Would you watch a GI Joe Anime? Done in the style of akira or ghost in the shell. It would be geared towards adults. So there would be some violence (blood shed). I would love to see a mature GI Joe series. And the reason i say anime, how many mature cartoons are there that arent anime?
of coarse the series would use early ARAH characters;)

What do you think?

Yes i would watch an anime-style G.I. Joe cartoon as long as it was intended for a more mature audience. And i want to see more than the same half dozen characters every episode.

Absolutely. You're right that the Sigma 6 Anime series is a bit more kiddified because it's aimed at children, but visually I think it is a great accomplishment on its own. Studio GONZO did a great job animating this show but I can understand some of the older fans desire to see something a bit more mature like the Ghost In The Shell TV series, Full Metal Panic, Area 88, or Madlax.

A GI Joe Anime series done in style of Ghost in the Shell? Would I watch that?

Oh yeah. I've posted on this very thought a couple of times, though I'd aim for a violence and story style similar to the Stand Alone Complex's rather than the movie.

That's what Hasbro should have done in the first place. They need to "up-gun" GI Joe and soon or they will never recapture kid's interests. Right now, the series seems to be aimed at, what, say 6-10 or something like that?

What happens in just a very few years? They grow up! Most of the target audience is already more mature than the current series.

Hasbro must darken and intensify GI Joe for an older audience. Low to mid teens would be perfect. Just low enough in violence and seriousness for the little kids to hear about it and WANT to see it just high enough to grab and hold older audience's attention.

The original cartoon was much more serious than Sigma 6 and, although I like S6, it's not what it could have been.

To summerize my thoughts, I'd love to see a grity, serious GI Joe Anime because, plain and simple, if it were done right it could be an enormous success. Maybe even an international success if Hasbro has the guts to let the Japanese really get involved.

Pardon the soap box moment. ;)

Basically, Spike, I am totally down with you on this! :D

And if the series were done right, then non gi joe, anime fans would watch it because it is anime, so it could drawn in that whole crowd as well...

I agree. The show has been good, but the obvious dumbing down for children has been a turn off. I don't think it is necessary to do that.

Of course there has to be a limit to violence and certain adult themes, but children can and will follow more complicated storylines. Media companies don't give children enough credit. Good stories are good stories. All ages can agree on that.

Afterall, I watched Robotech...

(I thought Exo-Squad was a great example of a kid's show that didn't dumb itself down.)

The Sigma 6 cartoons don't appeal to me largely for that reason, but I know a lot of joe enthuiasts don't like the Sunbow series and I love them, so to each his own.

anyone remember the sonic the hedgehog series? There were two series on air at the same time, one was on FOX and was very kiddie like with pies being thrown and goofy antics, then there was the one on ABC. This one had darker colors, draker plot and the characters were much more serious. I think a few characters may have died (or was turned into robots) but there was no blood. I was in my early teens when this was on and I have to say, it made me a big fan. I think if they went with this approach for GI Joe it would totally revitalise the cartoon.

I'm with you, Kir. I have rarely met a Japornime cartoon that I liked. Personally, I think that, overall, the anime cartoons are well done, as far as animation techniques go, but I don't like how some of the things are drawn. To illustrate my point, I refer to www.homestarrunner.com please go to Strong Bad e-mails and scroll to find the one titled "Japanese Cartoon" and watch. Hi-larious, but accurate.

If they can't make a justified awesome live action movie, at least make a cartoon that doesn't bring back nightmares of the first GI Joe movie. Yes, make it a bit more adult, but stay true to Larry Hama's Marvel run-in other words, stay relatively clean. Make it so the kids won't get in big trouble if they put Daddy's cartoon in the DVD player.

Actually, I think Larry Hama should write the movie, live action or cartoon. Or at least the story's outline and supervise it. After all, GI Joe is basically his baby to begin with.

One thing GI Joe did was to try to teach values to kids. Larry told a complex and interesting story, and his writing did have very good values.

What do you think? I hope I'm not making anyone mad by calling it "Japornime"

thats the thing though, anime is like american animation in the sense that there is many styles and types. By no means are animes all the same. The cartoon in that link was funny, but its making fun of old school "cartoony" anime. Many modern animes are very different. Just look at some of the pics below. I can totally see joes looking like that.
edit: but i do understand that some people just dont have a taste for it

Anime has quite a large variety of styles, but it's always obviously anime. That just doesn't jive well with the whole "Real American Hero," stuff. I wouldn't want to see Japan Joe anymore than I'd like to see Disney animate their own Trigun movie.

Right on! I admire the talents and abilities of the animators over there. I just don't really like all of the stuff they pump out. Especially the stuff where it gets gory or porny. That's just me. I know people that shell out as much money for anime that I do for GI Joe stuff. Go figure.
