Hey Nem I counted a total of 13 that were sold on ebay a year or so ago. I dont remember how long ago but I know I counted 13. I saw this figure and said I have to have it. Then one at a time they slipped through my fingers. I know I was the 2nd highest bidder on about 8 of them. I do keep my eyes open for this figure hoping to find another one for sale but I havent found one yet.
PS one more thing. When I talked to them at the 05 con the reps said they werent going to make it. Just a FYI
RedClaw 11-01-2006, 11:19 PM I recently sold mine, and as best I can tell, about 20 have been available either via eBay or private sales. So he's quite obsecure and is more of a "what if" rather then an actual, obtainable figure.
You have better odds of a Pimp Daddy Destro, but because the TF SB isn't as popular/mythological, he (TF SB) can be had for a more reasonable sum.
Also of note, is that the figure, to date, was never planned for retail or exclusive release. It was simply a test to check out the new head tooling, which was subsequently used in the anti-venom set.
Urban Saboteur 11-02-2006, 03:51 AM So ebay would be the way to go on this?, hmm.. well I can't say for sure I'm convinced on the leg?
Isn't he supposed to have tiger stripes?
Also.. if you look at the black strapping/holster on his leg, they look painted.. I don't mean painted like a factory .. I mean painted with an unsteady hand?
It's certainly a cool figure though.. one I would like to own one day, although I'm yet to even own a SB figure.. let alone any versions or RARE variants.

RedClaw 11-02-2006, 11:51 AM Nem: The entire figure is hand painted, except for the tampo-stamped G.I.Joe logo on the leg. Eventhough a number of these were produced in China, I believe that they were exclusively used as quality control samples for the new head sclupt that was later used to become the AV helmets.
The figure is most definitely a "prototype" in every sense of the word. The paint on the legs have a chalky/matte finish (as they were cast in a different color), the paint applications are entirely hand painted, and the figure is nothing more then a test.
As said before, it's extremely rare, as compared to other rare figures such as PDD or the Argen 7. Only the white Cobra Mortal and wave 2, 2001 KB Manimals are rarer.
starrcommand 11-02-2006, 04:52 PM I dont think it was hand painted. As the paint on the ones I have seen were identical. Also to note is that the legs were cast in a beige plastic ... same color as the paint if it had been glossy. Most of the paint on the figure was matte I believe. I would have to look at another one to tell you for certain. I have some better pix on my computer so if you are interested in seeing them email me nem.
My understanding on the whole thing was it was originally planned as a release figure and they decided to go a different route. Which I have to say is very sad b/c the figure does look very nice.
RedClaw 11-02-2006, 07:46 PM David,
I have spent nearly two years researching this figure. It was never planned for retail release. EVER.
IT IS HAND PAINTED. I own one! :) You can see the brush strokes.
dryhawk37 11-22-2006, 06:21 PM Yep, it is hand painted. A very unique piece to add to a collection, but fairly pricey :)

So.. the figure is hand painted and its NEVER planned for retail release.. doesn't this make it more an oddball hasbro custom.. or would you rather prefer to call it a prototype?
I aint trying to pick sides.. infact.. if it isnt a prototype or custom I really dont care.. its just a waaay  figure.. I never even took much notice to the Steel Brigade until I saw this one.. although if I am to admit I am rather fond of the Gold Head Steel Brigade.
Back to the actual topic.. Starrcommand has an understanding of the legs not being handpainted.. is it a case of you seeing a different production of figure.. forgive me for thinking this way.. but it seems almost you've crossed an entirely different figure mold yet based under the same character?
I'm gonna email you first thing starrcommand and have a look at this beige plastic you speak of.. I do have to admit though looking at the pics on yojoe leads me to believe the legs for one are hand painted.. I only spotted it because I paint figures myself.. and you rarely get that.. dare I say it.. sloppy strap line when the figure is massed produced.. the paint on the leg strapping is clearer/straighter... where as the one in the picture is more like the kind of painting I would do from home. Starrcommand.. email heading your way.
LONGFELLA 01-10-2007, 12:16 PM ??
Wasnt this the figure people could create for themselves? To put their own name and information on a file card. It was mail order and you became part of the "Steel Brigade"

That is true, for the original 1987 figure, and its subsequent offers until 1994.
But this figure, was purchased from China, and has never been released, and was used solely to test the new head tooling that was re sculpted, and lated used as helmets in the 2004 Anti-Venom task force.
Approximately a dozen are known to exist, but that's a "fuzzy" number at best.

They go for a pretty sizable amount, about $200-$250 would be a fair guess depending on the buyer and market condition.
