You can't even trust AFA to pay close enough attention to grade items that have incorrect parts. In this case, the filecard doesn't belong with the figure.

AFA...still one of the best scams going.

I don't think it is beyond the realm of possibilities that that bagged combo didn't happen at some point.

At some point - possibly in 1984 - Grand Slam was also available through Hasbro Direct.
http://www.yojoe.com/action/83/grandslam1p5.shtml

At some point they could have just grabbed whatever filecards they had on hand to bag them up.

Odder things have been found.

actually you are incorrect. That is the filecard that came with the mail in grand slam. They take a mail in and open it so it looks like a loose figure with filecard and give it a u grade I think meaning it was pulled from the bag. All the redback grand slams came like this unless it was a bubbled version

all the redback GrandSlams came with a Silver pad Grand Slam filecard?

The ones that came bagged with the file card inside did. It does seem odd but thats how they came.

interesting...I'll have to start looking for a bagged figure to verify this. Do you know anyone with a picture of a bagged figure with this card?

Another common weird one will be the sears scarlett that came with the cover girl file card.

Cool, thanks!!!!

This brings a couple of other questions then:
-Do ANY bagged Silver Grand Slams exist bagged with a filecard? According to the archives he was available through Hasbro Direct. I've never seen one bagged though.
-Do any red backed filecards of Grand Slam v1 exist?

I have one, I can send you a pic if you want. I've also had 3 others before and all were red Grand Slams with Silver Grand Slam File Cards.

I've searched endlessly for both of those and I have never seen any proof that either exists.

Silver padded doesn't exist unless you would have a salesman sample or something along those lines. A mail in does not exist of silver grand slam. As redback red grand slam card also does not exist. I will have to check like the sears/jcpenneys stuff to see if you would consider that a redback even though its not a mail in.

They're vehicle drivers so JC Penny and Sears wouldn't offer them on bubble cards right? I'm pretty sure they only offered the regular released figures on those cards.

Its good you brought it up.Theres all kinds of stuff like this that are not easy to find on yojoe. If you look up grandslam in the archives there is no mention of it unless you look elsewhere on the site.

Brian,

That is probably my fault. When I was adding all the redbacks I put them all under the cardback section. What I should have done was create a link on each figure's page to the redbacks or at least made mention of it. When I was working on the archives the figures weren't really my area (just Collectibles and Cardbacks) so I stayed out of that section. What you could do is ask Terry (redclaw) if someone can go through the redbacks I added and create links on the figure pages. I'm not sure what other projects they have going on right now though so they may/may not be able to work on it.

Not your fault at all Dan. You did tons for the archives and I know how much time you guys put into it. I think they are probably swamped as it is with the new stuff. The only thing that erks me is when you see a super hto rare item and it doesn't make it to the archives. Remember the jcpenneys soldier officer 3 pack on the bubble in the post. I don't think that ever made it to yojoe at all.

I definitely remember that. In fact, I saved the pics and John gave me permission to use the pics on the website I am working on. Trust me, you will see them again!

One of the reasons that particular Cobra 3-pack is so rare is because it was only offered in the 82 Penney's Christmas catalog--the 83 catalog doesn't show them at all which makes sense since they were straight arms. The 82 catalog shows them pretty as you please on page 516 with both the mortar and bazooka.

I don't recall an offer that had Grand Slam in it. Which one was it, the Original Team offer, or another one?

dmooretoys
01-03-2008, 10:02 PM
No, it wasn't the original team offer and I'm glad you brought that up. Here is yojoe's insert section:

http://yojoe.com/archive/inserts/

And here is the original team offer:

http://yojoe.com/archive/mailin/original.shtml

I have every insert on this page except the 2006 adventure team insert and the 1985 STARS Transformers insert and I made a mail-in master list that breaks down every figure and vehicle that was offered as well as what insert(s) each was offered from. I can tell you NONE of the inserts on this page offers Grand Slam.

Another point--I also have a lot of vintage catalogs including including a complete Sears Wish Book run from 1982-92, Wards X-Mas 1982-85 (last year), and JCPenney X-Mas from 1982-96 (excluding 84, 85, and 88) and after checking them I can't find a single one that offers Grand Slam. There were several sets of teams offered but not one includes a Grand Slam. Can someone shed some light on when the redback Grand Slam was offered? I for one would love to know!

Ooh...that brings back bad memories!

I remember getting that pamphlet when I ordered (a HISS, I think) and then ordering Major Bludd and four COBRA Officers that I NEVER GOT.

Wasn't there a huge Hasbro direct sale in Canada in the early 90's? Maybe it wasn't Canada but I know there was a huge sale. ANyway I believe some of the figures up for grabs were Hawk v1, Clutch v1, and Grand Slam v1. I think that's why you see those three figures pop up fairly regularly on ebay MIP.

Even if that wasn't the sale, I do know they're not Sear's or penny's exclusives. They came from hasbro direct. I believe Dryhawk??? aka Drew was the one who I heard that from years ago.

That sale was a Canadian exclusive and neither Hawk, Clutch nor Grand Slam were offered. Here are scans of that premium booklet and try not to cry at the prices most of us missed out on:

So the question remains--where in the world were the version 1 Clutch, Hawk, and Grand Slam redbacks offered?

Yes, Hasbro Canada completely sold out of their Joe product. If you ordered figures that were sold out, they replaced them with other figures that were still available. But, in the end, everything was sold. I think I still have a letter from them dated 1999 that says such, too.

(I'll look for that for you, Dan. ;) )
