I was looking at the preproduction archive (http://www.yojoe.com/archive/preprod/) today, and I thought I should ask this ...

Do you actually like a certain preproduced figure more than the one that got produced?

Personally, I think that the preproduced Golobulus is waaay better than the actual one... (with a tail he could actually stand up with)... it would still look dumb though ;)

I still have to grab another 25th Battle Armour Cobra Commander. I always like the "Ferret" driver preproduction. As for a favorite, The preproduction Cobra seem much scarier than the released one.

The prepro Cobra trooper and Officer had very cool head and body sculpts that I like more than the production versions. I also like the prepro Crimson Twins head better.

The twins looked better. The officer and trooper heads at least look better.

Hydro Viper's black vest looked better.

Cobra-La and the Renegades overall looked better.

Proto Backstop's helmet looked better (and he looked Asian).

Can anyone point me to the link for the unproduced '84 Joe "mountain climber" that Scrap Iron's body is rumored to have been for? I'm not seeing it in the archives.

Never seen a picture or even a sketch of that figure. Not sure there is one online.

Payload ver. 3. I thought the repaint of the original mold seen on the filecard looks better than the produced figure.

I can't remember where or how I actually heard this but...

SCRAP-IRON's body was originally molded and created to be used for the ALPINE character. But for some reason or another, Hasbro decided against it and it became a late scratch as I'm guessing they had better plans for ALPINE. So the mold was then ultimately used in making the 1984 SCRAP-IRON.

Here's also a neat tid bit to go along with what was just said. If you'll take a look at SCRAP-IRON's legs, you'll notice that he has climbing spikes and I think carribeaner tools too!! I'll try and take a picture of this neat and interesting detail for you guys, and have it posted when I get home later from work...

I'd read the same thing, but I can't find where now. I'm planning a custom with an extra Scrap Iron body, but wondering whether to make him an alternate Alpine (I really like the original figure already) or a completely different climber. That's why I hoped someone had more info on the original climber figure (proto-art anyone?). I figure Airborne sortof took the spot (rappelling out of helicopters is too close to mtn climbing), so Hasbro cancelled until Alpine came along.

And there are only climbing spikes on Scrap Iron (= "What are those things on Scrap Iron's legs?"), no carabiners. I always thought they were wicked throwing knives, but I couldn't explain why S.I. would wear a harness all the time.

I liked a lot of the prototype 1997 figures better than the released versions:
- Blizzard, both Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Alley Viper, and Rock 'n Roll
- the camo pattern and red trim for the Trubble Bubble
- the Alley Viper planned for the 1997 boxed sets

Also:
- Flash, Short-Fuze, and Hawk, as they appear in the 1982 catalog (better face, black visors, brilliant gold straps)
- the Golobulus and Nemesis Enforcer appearing in the 1987 catalog
- Tiger Force Recondo with brown shirt and hat
- I seem to remember seeing a Tiger Force Torpedo somewhere
- Charbroil's all-silver helmet and Backblast's red missiles
- Airborne's rifle, in light grey, with Python Copperhead
- the original patterns for the Slaughter's Marauders
- Salvo's open-visor helmet
- Eco-Warriors Deep Six with killer whale (more special than dolphins)
- the Wild Weasel on the back of the copper Rattler box
- the grey Shock Viper
- red-shirted Mission Disc Destro

Okay, so here are some pictures as promised...

If you guys look real closely, you will notice the subtle similarities between the two molds. From climbing tools, to the buckles and belt straps... the two both yield similar ideas that Hasbro had envisioned when creating our infamous "Mountain Trooper."

Once again, I can't really remember where this rumor surfaced or where I heard this from. But I really thought that this was pretty cool and really wanted to share these neat visuals with you all...

Some great stuff there dryhawk. I don't recall ever seeing a HISS driver in the cartoon, so it is weird to see a cel for it. And what does it say on the Cobra Soldier cel?
