That's actually a second head that can be swapped out, not a helmet.

Some of those poses make them look like they're 'playing' their rifles air-guitar style. The gold face even looks like he's singing. Stupid "Amercan Idol".

It says Mercer was the only Viper to join GI Joe and survive. So obviously others have done it. I wonder how the others died. Maybe a bunch of Vipers wanted to join but there was only room for one so they had a fight to the death and Mercer won. Or maybe not....
