I know I haven't been a heavy hitter around here lately, but I still lurk...

Anyhow, for those who know me on a personal level, I got engaged on 4/28. Thought I'd pass on the good news.

I hope she knows she is marrying you and your toys. If she makes you choose between her and your joes, Side with her , and send me your Joes.

I would hate for a marriage to end over Joes. :)

A bit of advice... remember the wedding is all about the two of you. I've been to too many weddings that are so overdone that the fact that two people are love is completely lost. I've seen brides who won't talk to their mothers or sisters for years because of some silly detail at their wedding, and I never understood that.

My wife said she either wanted ice sculptures and violins, or she wanted to go somewhere great to get married. We ended up going to Kauai, Hawaii, just the two of us, and we we're married by a native Hawaiian on a gorgeous cliffside with the ocean crashing just below us. For just over $5,000 we rented a condo for two weeks on the beach, rented a jeep and did all kinds of off-roading and back country touring, did the helicopter ride, ATV rental, and two day trips, one snorkeling and one scuba. There are great resorts on the island, but the best part is all the ocean front land is public access. We would go to a different resort every day for a brunch. After brunch, we'd grab the snorkel gear out of the jeep and snorkel for a few hours. Then it was back to the condo for cold tropical beverages or beer, marital affairs, and a nap. Afternoons were adventure time (off-roading in the jeep, helicopter tour, etc.) Then a nice dinner every night. The $5,000 also included the air fare and the wedding. Very few people have a wedding and a honeymoon for $5,000.

I worked for a great restaurant company in Chicago when I got married. We came back and were able to get one of the restaurants to waive any rental fees. The owner of the company took care of the labor for me, so all I had to pay for was food and booze, about $2,000. We had a open-house type reception where we invited people from 12-3, and about 350 people showed up.

So, all totalled, $7,000 for everything. Not bad, everyone was (and are) super happy, and everyone was accomodated. Sorry to rant, but I just wanted to show you that you can have a great wedding experience for not a lot of money.

Best of luck!

I can agree with much of what you wrote. I was married in Dec 2009- the day after Christmas. We said from the start it would be small and simple... it was. We got married in our church. It was a great day.

On a side not, I am also a minister and can tell you that many people put much focus on one day and not the life they need to build together.

Congrats on the engagement.
