    Devil's Due Run: Good, Bad, and Ugly

    The first DD G.I. Joe comic volume is over. What were your favorite moments? Which scenarios would you prefer to forget? Did you enjoy one volume over another, ie Reloaded over Frontline? How would you improved the comic(s)?

    I preferred Frontline over Reloaded. It was funny to see the overweight Bazooka working as a security guard.

    I'd have improved the comic by coloring it more traditionally. The computer coloring looked very flat. I think the pencils could have been better too.

    The Good:

    -Having a regular monthly comic(s) in the Marvel continuity
    -Building on the Snake-Eyes saga with the introduction of Sean Collins, Master & Apprentice I, etc.
    -Updated uniforms & equipment
    -More "mature" dialogue & use of current events/politics/military procedures

    The Bad:

    -introduction of Greenshirts
    -introduction of cartoon elements such as Cobra appearing on television to threaten the world, large scale overt Cobra assault on US territory (#4), GI Joe be acknowledged by the government & members being known to the public, allowing non-specialized personal operate any vehicle, etc
    -lack of detailed vehicle battles
    -too much focus on "detective" work
    -rushed story lines including General Rey & Red Shadows

    The Ugly (What I would have done differently)

    -tone down the in-fighting in Cobra so that Cobra Commander looks credible from the begining of the series/ slowly re-introduce characters over many issues instead of having all of Cobra Command back in action in issue #1/ play up Destro's inner struggle to re-join Cobra

    -focus on a key team of 25 members with special appearances by specialists
    (Hawk/Duke/Stalker/SnakeEyes/Scarlett/Flint/LadyJaye/Roadblock/Shipwreck/Tunnelrat/GungHo/WildBill/Ace/Spirit/Clutch/CoverGirl/BeachHead/Lowlight/Dusty/DialTone/Torpedo/Outback/???)/ acknowledge that the GI Joe team now has a limited budget & slimmed down roster (think Marvel #1-25ish)

    -come up with a clear plausibe story for Storm Shadow's return to Cobra

    -diversify stories with some issues focusing on vehicle battles ( think Marvel #1, #8, #25, #34, #36, #80) & small arms battles, while also driving the main plot to some conclusion from time to time (Cobra needs to win sometimes!)

    -artists need to take the time to draw detailed vehicles, firearms, & backgrounds (I was never satisified with any of these things in DDP's run with the except of M & A I. Thankfully, that artist duo is drawing the new book!)

    -Re-Loaded: Same suggestions as above Also, would have started series with a full team of the original 13 with Steeler, Breaker, Flash, Zap, Grand Slam, & Short Fuse all getting killed to set the tone for the seriousness of the conflict
    I would have introduced an arrogant Flint earlier in the series to not only begin his courting of Lady-Jaye, but to act as a rival to Beachhead's no nonsense character.

    I think DD can fix all of it's problems by just taking the comic seriously. I mean, am I wrong in thinking that some of the stories and some of the scenes in the stories were just too absurd? And think of all the plot holes that have poped up from story arc to story arc. These are symptoms of lax interest.

    Now, I grew up on the cartoon first and the comic second, so I can enjoy some of the absurd and humerous stories without being as judgemental as some people. I'm not a devotee of Larry Hama, though I do respect and admire his work.

    Still, when the writers for the DD line of GI Joe seemed to care less about the story than I did, well that just makes for bad writing and empty, hollow stories. They need to do the following to make this new series work.

    1: Drop the artificial story arcs. Not every arc can be four issues. If you need five or even twenty, then use them!

    2: Make new characters more interesting by giving us at least one issue in an arc where they are central to defeating Cobra and by giving us a few flashbacks and friendships with older Joe characters. Acting like they are replacements for old Joes isn't going to make us like them at all.

    3: Cobra MUST win. Not always, but they have to win occasionally. Also, they must win realistically or at least realistically in the confines of the comic world! No more death satelites or nanomachines! Win by trickery, manipulation, and pure ruthless determination!

    4: Other terror groups. Introducing darker real-world elements and mentioning world events isn't going to bother older readers and it may increase readership among younger, savy kids. Remember, they have plenty of other choices so don't insult their intelligence.

    5: Sometimes there need to be story arcs that no one knows about. How about a mission that goes horribly wrong and a Joe team member is captured. The others have no idea what is happening to him/her, but the reader does because the entire arc would be from their perspective and Cobra's. Only at the beginning and end would we see the other Joes. Very dramatic and a great way to introduce new characters, by showing them to be real heros willing to suffer and even die just to keep Cobra from winning.

    6: Finally, take longer to get to where you are going with a story. The entire Red Shadows deal was two issues. Two double-sized issues, but still just two issues. In this fast paced world, people who read books, even comic books, want something indepth and more subtle. They don't want to be rushed through a story that feels forced, they want to be tantalized and held in the grip of the story until the very end.

    Well, that's my thoughts. Sorry that they took so long.

    Overall, I really like the DD run of GI Joe. I wish some story arcs were longer (Red Shadows) and some others were shorter (the crazy BAT) but that's just nitpicking. One thing I would have done differently was to focus on some other Joes besides the main ones. I thought the art and colors were great. The weakest issue I read was, sadly, the Frontline written by Larry Hama. It totally sucked - I was really bummed out since I was expecting a lot more. Overall, I give the series a B+.

    Hehe....Have that bookmarked a long time ago. I have all the Shadow stories on disc (downloaded them a couple of years ago from a legit site- they're not pirated). Man, I love the pulps! The Shadow, the Spider (man, he was crazy), and others. I can't get enough of the pulps. Plus, I also like old movie serials from the 1930s and 1940s. My dad got me into them. Lots of action! Guaranteed 1-2 fistfights, car chases, or gun battles in 15-20 minutes! Woo-Hoo!

    The Good: the first story arc.
    The Bad: the rest of the issues.
    The Ugly: the fact that the Devil's Due comic was never anything more than glorified fanfic. Toy tie-in fiction is supposed to fiction ABOUT THE TOYS. DD needed writers with enough creativity to write about the characters who were in the toyline. In the year 2003, did we really need a story arc revolving around Serpentor? Was there ever any reason for the new Red Shadows to exist?
