TRU just cleaned out some old stock, and many of them (including mine) got a bunch of Wave 5\'s in (yes, I bought the Stone, but he\'s already promised to someone else). He was an awesome figure and a lot of people missed him - too bad he wasn\'t "green cased" instead of some of those Wave 4 figs. But a few people at JBL are thinking this is a fluke or deliberate price inflation, as it is well out of line with prior rates ($40 would be more typical, less now that more just hit the market), but I can also see this being a panic buy brought on by the line\'s imminent doom (seemingly).\r\n

Guess I\'ll have to hit the closest TRU today...

\nYeah, I would agree that these could be panic buys. I got my Lt Stone off Ebay for $32 just one month ago. I will say though that I\'ve only ever seen one at retail and that was a long time ago.\r\n

\r\n I did venture to my local TRU today. They had 3 version two Tunnel Rats and 1 version one Tunnel Rat. Everything else was new and there were no new soldier figures. They had a bunch of Commandos, a bunch of AT\'s including SA which I saw in hand for the first time, a bunch of Duke Paratroopers, and a bunch of SA Mechs. There was one peg for 25th singles and it was empty. I\'d wait on the SA Mech robot. It won\'t be long before he\'s marked down to $10 everywhere. Also stopped at a local surplus store and was excited to see the Sigma 6 logo out of the corner of my eye. But all they had were about 15 green Hovercycles for $7.99 a piece and about 8 Switchfire guns for the same price.\r\n

\r\n So I was winning the Lt. Stone with less than 2 minutes at $40. I was equally excited and scared. One the one hand it was a Stone at $40. Was I really going to win? On the other hand $40 for a toy my wife was going to kill me. But then as expected but just a little late. Two guys bid it up to $70+. Well, at least I am not sleeping on the couch tonight.\r\n

That seems absurd, to influence buying on something so arbitrary as that list. . .but at the same time, I wouldn\'t be too surprised if true. In my experience on eBay with toys, the smallest little inkling that demand should be high, or that supply might be getting low, and voila\', prices soar.\r\n

\r\n I think that army building might have something to do with the popularity of Stone as well. He comes with the Cobra Trooper disguise. You can use his disguise on extra figures and build an army of a figure that all collectors wanted but never got. I\'d probably use Paratrooper Dukes head and helmet and v1 Firefly\'s body. Sounds cool to me.\r\n

\r\n
\r\n Stone was something of a perfect storm for Sigma 6 figures.
\r\n
\r\n1) He\'s an awesome fig, ranked at or near the top of every 8" collectors\' list, and #10 on ToyFare\'s Top100 toys of the last decade.
\r\n
\r\n2) He\'s a new character, which typically sells well (see GrandSlam, Lockdown, Recondo, Flint).*
\r\n
\r\n3) No other version exists. These too, tend to sell well, especially to collectors who don\'t want another Duke, Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow.
\r\n
\r\n4) He was prominantly featured in the second season of the cartoon, likely increasing appeal to kids.
\r\n
\r\n5) His wave was released once w/ no carry forwards, which means they likely have smaller overall numbers than the Commandos in Wave 1, 2, 4, and 6. Note that other figures in the wave (Zartan, Artic SE** and BFG Cobra Commander) also have a high demand. Only Red Pants Stormy, who offered nothing new besides the pants, fails to command a decent price.
\r\n
\r\n6) Early rumors were that the black armored Stone would be a limited variant, who would be replaced with a more common blue-armored version. This got completists and scalpers in the hunt for multiple black Stones, and many were sold at a high price on ebay last winter touting the black Stone as a rare variant. While the blue armor never came to be, this did help clear the toys off shelves.
\r\n
\r\n7) The biggest reason though is likely the Cobra armor. This allows him to double as a Cobra Soldier. This is big for two reasons: first, collectors have always gone nuts for the Cobras (v1 Storm Shadow, v1 and v2 Cobra Commander, both Destros, both Fireflies, and Zartan were all HTF at one point), and second, it makes Stone the perfect fix for troop builders.***
\r\n
\r\n8) His wave was released just in time for the holidays, when general demand is at it\'s highest. If any were left over, hungry parents likely scoffed them up.
\r\n
\r\n9) The end of the line is coming. Emotions are playing havok with collectors, many of whom are scrambling to find the figures they missed earlier. Given the above factors, Stone is a likely candidate to be a missed figure. And of couse scalpers smell that desperation and prey upon it.
\r\n
\r\n10) 1-9 combined make the figure rare. Rare makes the figure semi-valuable. Semi-valuable and rare will attract the interest of those otherwise not interested. It will encouage otherwise right-minded collectors to consider keep at least one MISB, perhaps to one day sell and put their children through college (or at least buy a text book). In short, being in demand increases the demand. This will likely continue until it doesn\'t.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n*Hasbro may have caught on to this too late. Note that all but 1 of the unproduced figures shown at JoeCon were new to the 8" scale.
\r\n
\r\n**Note that Artic SE was released 2 to a case, making him the most common Wave 5 toy. However, there were 3 variants of Timber\'s color, two of which - black and gray - tend to fetch higher prices, though not as much as Zartan, BFG CC or Stone.
\r\n
\r\n***Something else Hasbro may have been learning. Of the last 9 Commandos and 6 Soldiers, there were 8 Cobras, two of which were inherent troop builders (admittedly one of them sucked balls, but that\'s another matter).\r\n

It appears that MISB Stones have come back down to a more reasonable level of $40 to $50. I\'ve seen v2 Heavy Dutys selling for $50 to $60 though, as well as Jet Wing Dukes.

Yep, things are cooling off overall. A few things likely triggered a spike. First the release of new figures will get people hitting the \'bay for early purchases. Second, JoeCon would people in a Joe frame of mind, and temporarily increase demand. Third, the announcement that the line is ending would get a few people to 1) complete their collection, or 2) sell off what they have. When one person overpays on a figure - the $100 stone - it starts a chain reaction that drives up the prices on other figures, and gets people to stary dropping toys on eBay with rediculous BiNs. As of now, Lockdown\'s that were going for $40 are down to $10-20, Stone is back in the $40-50 neighborhood, and the other new figs are about where they should be - between retail and $10 over. Only oddity I\'ve seen was a Red/Blue Heavy Duty going for $50-70, but that could just as easily have been 1 or 2 obsessives outbidding each other. It\'s an obscure enough variant that I think demand is relatively low, so after a couple sell, the price could come back to earth.\r\n

I see a SE ATV up to $66 already. I\'m glad I got that one when I did. I\'m looking forward to the next couple of years of yard sales. We should start to see these figures popping up because there isn\'t any reason for kids to stay interested in the line.\r\n

That I can understand. It really was a limited release, hit only a few store chains, none of them major toy retailers, and came out exactly when people were distracted by the TF movie toys. I imagine most casual S6 collectors (those not involved in the online community) missed these at retail.\r\n

That seems absurd, to influence buying on something so arbitrary as that list. . .but at the same time, I wouldn't be too surprised if true. In my experience on eBay with toys, the smallest little inkling that demand should be high, or that supply might be getting low, and voila', prices soar.
