I hope you are joking. Well I dont know about the folks at Hasbro but it appears they never talked to the Navy on this. Being in the Marine Corp I got to be on a carrier for a few days. Hasbro didn't do their research on that.

Yeah I'm just playin' with ya about the editing Wikipedia stuff...

It looks like the editor of that wiki did not do his/her research either. They simply looked at the number on the launch deck and immediately associated it with the Kitty Hawk-class USS America. I would even go so far as to say that is not a common mistake, since most of the time the number is on the Island of a real AC anyway. So while it could have been influenced by a Kitty Hawk-class carrier, it's jumping to conclusions to say that it is a Kitty Hawk-class carrier based on the hull classification number.

It would have been a really great story, because the USS America was actually sunk in a "live target" demonstration as a way of disposing of it. What is really trippy is that they did this about a decade after the toy was released. They both have more symbolic names that are often used together in other context (ie: American Flag), rather than being named after a forefather or battleground. (Although you could argue that "Flagg" was the name of the GI Joe leader, and "Americos" was Columbus' colleague or whatever.)

At any rate, it's safe to say that the USS Flagg is merely influenced by other real-life carriers of different classes, and not a direct copy of any one class. I'm gonna have to make my stand with DPrime on this matter.

On a side note, post #7 of this thread has some anecdotal information about Admiral Ledger.

...but I wasn't kidding about the TARDIS stuff. LOL

Anyone happen to know if the Ferret is modeled from a specific quad, or is it just a generic one? That is what will determine where it is placed on the list. Same with the Devilfish. For that, I did some searching of river racers, speedboats, and hydroplanes. It looks like it might have been a river racer, but its features are too blunt to tell for sure.

    OK, Wiki edited....
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Flagg

I took a bunch of what we were going over with the flagg to edit the listing to make it more accurate for suppositions rather than stating thigns as factually known to be incorrect.

Plus I made it sound better. Who ever did those edits didn't know how to write either.

    A P C

I just watched Black Hawk Down on the FX channel tonight. The UN APCs near the end of the movie seem to resemble the GI Joe APC more than any other candidate on this thread. Well, I've been searching for two hours now, and I can't figure out what model that APC is. I think the vehicles were actually Malaysian, but the drivers in the movie were Pakistani. If they were supposed to belong to Malaysia, then it would likely be Russian design, or copied from Russian designs. The Malaysian Condor APC is definitely not the right one, so that will save you some time if you are looking.

On the other hand, it could have been the only APCs that were on hand during filming and had nothing to do with the real ones of that region. Whatever it was, it was the closest thing to the GI Joe APC, so I wanna know what it was.

Possibly, but which one? Most of the BTRs are 8x8, and the tip of the nose either angles towards the underside of the vehicle, or is flat, or is tapered. The GI Joe APC is either an extended 6x6 or converted to a 6x6 from an 8x8. The blunt part of its nose angles up towards the roof. The one in BHD had the GI Joe-style nose. Until I saw this, I had resigned the APC to generic-land in my mind.

Good call, AK. LOL @ that bit about the Russians and their tanks. I had noticed this before, too. One day while I was following links from the Mauler, I said, "Hey, that turret looks an awful lot like it goes on top of the Tunguska in Battlefield 2." When I initiated this thread, it had totally slipped my mind.

I'm sure there are other vehicles out there that haven't been covered. This thread says '80s vehicles, but it doesn't have to be if folks wanna have fun with later vehicles and equipment. The only thing is if you have a vehicle contribution, make sure the majority of that mold wasn't used in another contribution. I.e.: the Stinger doesn't exactly qualify, since the VAMP was used. The Equalizer qualifies because it has a completely distinguishable real-life turret apart from the Mauler.
